It's all about content rights - apple needs to negotiate with the content owners to sell the books in Switzerland (which is not a large market so probably not their highest priority)

It's highly unlikely Apple's ever going to be selling books (or any other "print"-content, or video content, for that matter) here in Switzerland. It's already a big surprise to me that they allow Swiss users to download some of the US publications in the App Store. The problem is: Switzerland is totally insignificant as a market.

One also has to realize, however, that it's Apple's own fault that they can't sell in Switzerland when it comes to books - normal printed books are licensed for the whole language area (Switzerland, Germany, Austria etc.). However, since Apple had to force it's freaking DRM-schemes on all the publishers they're signing deals with, that kind of freedom is now a thing of the past. And that's not even the worst of it: at the same time, they're forcing the publishers to withdraw the content from Amazon as well. For example, Random House was forced to withdraw their books from the international sections of the Kindle store because Apple forced them to do so (they wouldn't sign them for iBooks, otherwise). These publishers are now completely out of reach for most customers world-wide.

This just shows again how powerful Apple has become. My advice to everyone: no matter how tempting Apple's products may seem on first sight, steer clear of that company. They're blood-sucking bastards without any kind of business ethics. Until the anti-trust agencies in the US and the EU have taken steps to stop their megalomania, these tendencies are going to continue.

Peter

ps: just install the Kindle App and download books from Amazon. At the moment, they still have a decent selection for Switzerland

Re: whats up with ibooks on the ipad for CH ?

Can you change your location (do you have a foreign contact address, credit card etc)? Im using the UK store and its not too bad.

A better option might be to get the 'Kindle" app. The amazon store is much more comprehensive and quite a lot cheaper.

The only downside is that the books do not display as nicely as with ibooks (no side by side pages in landscape which is my fav way to read) and I could not get the magazine subscriptions to work, this is no big deal as at the moment kindle is b&w with no vid etc (I heard they are going to change for the ipad though)
(Apologies just noticed that Dawiz already suggested Kindle =^_^=)

I've said it before, just buy/convert your books in ePUB format and then they will display beautifully in iBooks.

The best software by far is Calibre, and it's free (although donations are encouraged).

Foolproof instructions here for those wanting an iTunes account in a different country. I use this trick for apps / video, but assume it would work for books as well.
