Internet censorship in CH? Can't be...

I was reading the bbc news website.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/default.stm

The ongoing saga about the Geordie cyclepath on the run, who has so far shot his ex-bird, her new lover and a plod...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/england/tyne/10505263.stm

Mysteriously, I can not access the main story thread from a Swiss IP address... and as the main story has developed, I haven't been able to access the previous leading pages on the story either...

Re: Internet censorship in CH? Can't be...

The BBC blocks certain content to places outside of the UK. It may be that you've tried to watch a video or something and you've recieved a message saying that "This media is not available in your territory".

This has nothing to do with censorship, but more to do with how the BBC controls it's content. To bypass this you'll need to go through either a VPN or a proxy server located in the UK. Plenty of threads on that if you do a search.

Re: Internet censorship in CH? Can't be...

BBC doesn't block simple news webpages as far as I'm aware, only some embedded video.

I can't access the 10505263 link (Basel, Cablecom) either.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/england/tyne/10505263.stm

Mobile version works
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/mobile/engla...e/10505263.stm

So does this one
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/e...e/10505263.stm

Odd!

In this thread so far, we have confirmed downloads from GE and ZH - yet, I still can not see the page from ZH myself (Cablecom ISP).

Not really odd. It just means the BBC has screwed up a link. Happens a bit with them IME.

Odd!
I'm not going slightly mad then. But I might not be the only one blacklisted...

Many moons ago, I lived in China (and set up a proxy server at my EU home address). While www.cnn.com didn't get through the great firewall, bizarrely, the mirror robot.cnn.com did.

This "problem" seems to be somehow related to Cablecom?

I respectfully disagree, Mr Slaphead.

We have confirmed kills from some posters, on the original link (verified with screenshots).

Yet, Mr Daddy and Mr London can not reach the page.

It most certainly is odd.

Re: Internet censorship in CH? Can't be...

I tried a neighbour's (unsecured) wireless which I "believe" uses Swisscom and that didn't work, either.

I wonder if the link is duff but some people (in some areas) are accessing a cached version of the page?

When I lived in China 4 years ago their blocking was semi-easy to get around. Well, website blocking was, keyword filtering was impossible without SSL.

In China I used
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/

Instead of
http://news.bbc.co.uk/

as the latter is blocked.

Interestingly, using the former now, I can see the link. And, in fact, ALL LINKS work normally now as well

What fun!

I'm accessing from swisscom over the 3g network and I get the same problem - a 404 error when accessing the page. Trust me, it's just a duff link

I can get to it. It's just a comms error. It's not filtering..

Re: Internet censorship in CH? Can't be...

Now that the dust has settled, is there an expert out there, who can make sense of all this, for the interested lay, like me?

[I, like Mr London, can now (several hours later) access the originally 404'd page.]

Yeah, the link was screwed, then fixed, and it took a while to move around the interweb.

We already did. It's a communications issue. It could be anywhere in the chain and it could be comms or caching or name resolution but it's a common bog standard error and not. Cencorship.

On a slightly unrelated (to BBC) note, I just got the following message when googling a matlab question:

In response to a complaint we received under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 1 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaint that caused the removal(s) at ChillingEffects.org.

Makes Swiss cycle paths seem boring in comparison, doesn't it. Never seen one move, let alone hold a gun.....

Yes, and they also add advertising, which they don't do in the UK. Presumably this is because they assume people inside the UK have payed the license fee whereas those outside haven't.

So according to your IP address, you may be seeing slightly different content. Also, the ads I'm getting appear to be localised, so depending on where I am I am seeing different ads. Sometimes it messes up though. I took my laptop to Austria some weeks back and since then many of the ads I'm seeing on the BBC site appear to be targetted at Austrian residents. I'm also seeing a lot of wedish ones for some reason. I suppose the system has its quirks.

Have you tried deleting your cookies and cache? Could be there's something there that's messing up?
