Where can I get my Desire??

I am anxious to get the HTC Desire but the Swisscom store near me and the Orange store we drove to a couple of days ago are both sold out and were not sure when more would be available. Does anyone know of any Orange stores that actually have it in stock, or am I out of luck? I know I could buy it online for full retail price but unfortunately that's a bit expensive

There is low stock worldwide of this phone. Your best bet is sim free

Re: Where can I get my Desire??

All right, after checking on digitec, which I haven't used before, they don't have them in stock but expect a new shipment in "mid July". I could at least order it and select a plan (going to go with Orange since my hubby has it) and not have to pay full retail price...I think I will probably do that

Re: Where can I get my Desire??

HTC have really been off the ball with supplying their lovely phones. I think the problem is with the screen manufacturer and some of the newer devices may have LCDs instead of AMOLEDS.

As for the contract being cheaper, well it swings in roundabouts. You pay more per month to get the phone cheaper then are tied into a 24 month contract. It's best to calculate how much you would be over the same period of time in total by buying the phone sim free and by getting a contract and decide from there.

Aha, very true. 2 years is a long time I suppose, especially with the rate that new phones are coming out, haha. I blame my hubby for all of this anyway. Before I came over, I had the regular Iphone 3G. He told me I could get the 3GS when I came over if I wanted to, and of course I did. Once I got here, he gave me an a Swisscom ad listing a bunch of different phones and said, "If you want, you can have a look and see if you like anything different." I researched a few and wasn't overly impressed with anything and had brushed over the Desire thinking it was just "another Iphone". The hubby convinced me to take a second look at it, and then I started researching it on the web and now I just want one really bad, haha

Re: Where can I get my Desire??

What kind of price are the SIM free handsets?

I had a look on toppreise.ch and they are quoting around CHF 600, but I can't tell if these are the unlocked / handset only ones.

Re: Where can I get my Desire??

The HTC desire has been out for some months now, actually 7 months if you take into account the virtually identical Google Nexus One. Not trying to put you off or anything, but there should be a new one out very soon.

Desire has been consistently reviewed as being superior to the Nexus one. There are a few changes in hardware and the software is really quite different on the Desire with the HTC sense overlay.

I have a HTC Desire and I am quite impressed with it. For half the price of iPhone you get the same kick (you know what I mean)

Have the HTC Desire too and am very happy with it. Actually drove to Lucerne to get it from Digitec there.

Re: Where can I get my Desire??

I've been looking into this more, and am very tempted by the Desire, especially given the reception problems on the iPhone 4. I'm going to hold off until I see how the iPhone 4 pans out when it reaches Switzerland, but for the first time since the launch of the first iPhone, I'm tempted by a switch.

There is one thing that bothers me, which perhaps others on here may have some advice on. At the moment I'm pretty locked into the Apple ecosystem - my music and video is all stored on iTunes, and likewise photos in iPhoto. I've got no wish to change this, as all my computers are Macs, and it works pretty nicely for me.

With the iPhone the syncing process is seamless - music playlists are transferred as is, as are photo albums and events. With the Desire I guess I would have to move this stuff across manually, right?

How easy is this? Is there a way to move a photo album from iPhoto, or a playlist from iTunes without creating a new folder somewhere, copying the photos or tracks into that, and then moving that folder across to the phone? Can you, for example, at least drag and drop a playlist direct from iTunes?

My calendars are all synced through MobileMe - how would they get onto the Desire?

Also, the HTC manuals make a big deal out of linking contacts with Facebook or Twitter accounts. I'm not a big user of social media - as such, would a major part of the Desire's design be wasted on me?

Almost as in:
  • 0.5" smaller screen
  • CPU and GPU of half the speed vs Desires Snapdragon processor
Bit like comparing a netbook to a laptop is some respects... not quite as drastic, but the Desire is in another class in terms of power.

Can't answer the iTunes/mac sync part of your post, as I'm a Win user and it synchronises very well with my pc/google mail/calender/contacts etc.

But as for the FB/Twitter accounts... no. It's just a widget you can place on one of your homescreens which keeps you up to date, pretty useless for me so I just don't use it. With the HTC Desire you're really free to set up your homescreens as you like them. For example I use 2 e-mail accounts, Gmail and Hotmail, and like to keep it that way for the moment due to various reasons, so I set up 2 homescreens for mails just to have an easy overview. Another homescreen I use as a calender, all the apps I rarely use I can neatly store in folders.. quite like it that way, much more to customize than an iPhone.

For the more adventurous type, now Google is offering a do-it-yourself mobile app tool. The tool, which is available now in Google Labs, is called App Inventor.

Thanks. So do you have it set up to automatically sync certain folders on your PC to transfer music / photos, or do you have to drag and drop the files from PC to phone each time? (I'm assuming the phone shows up in Windows Explorer as a new drive).

Re: Where can I get my Desire??

It automatically syncs whenever both my notebook and Desire are in the same wireless network. There's a multitude of options, tools for that purpose, it really depends how you set it up. I also use Dropbox (2GB storage online) to have some music/data on whatever device I use, which also only syncs when connected to a wireless network(don't want to use my dataplan too much)
Richdog's much more knowledgeable about these things than me, I'm a bit of an idiot when it comes to phones, but even I managed to sync these things, it's pretty neat.
I think the HTC Desire is perfect if you use all the Google tools and services, iPhone might be better if you're a Mac user with iTunes etc. But the HTC Desire can be used with a real file manager, and I can just drag and drop files via bluetooth, which to my knowledge you can't on an iphone. I don't like restrictive systems so to me that's a bonus. I have to admit that the new iPhone is pretty neat too though.

Interesting, thanks. All my email is funnelled through a Gmail account so that's no problem. It's also fairly trivial to sync iCal to Google Calendar. It's more syncing iTunes playlists and iPhoto albums that's concerning me at the moment.

I fully agree that a real file manager is a bonus, however I've used the iTunes / iPhoto file management structure (and associated albums etc in the applications) for so long, I'm not willing to reorganise it all now just for a phone. However I'd be surprised if there weren't some syncing solutions out there for Mac users.

Re: Where can I get my Desire??

It's all about what you're used to I guess. I prefer having my music in neat folders: genre/artist/album than having to organise huge playlists that are either automatically generated/sorted or managed by me... drag and drop does it for me, but then again I'm not a Mac user.
