Re: Kindle and it's free 3G

There is a lot of information on this thread but i am still not clear about my situation.

I am living in Basel but my family is in the US. They have offered to buy me a kindle for xmass and i have chosen the Touch 3G. So if they buy it in the US will it be free 3G and usable for me here in Switzerland? DO they have to specify that i live here even though it will be delivered to the states? (I will be home in a month so can just take it back with me). Very confusing!

Re: Kindle and it's free 3G

Simple answers to all your questions:

-Yes the 3G is free here in Switzerland, even if you purchase it in the US
-You can change your home location (US or Switzerland or wherever) at any time after you have purchased the Kindle in your Kindle Account Page at Amazon.com. I had mine set to Switzerland and then changed it the other day to U.S because there is a larger selection of books and it's a bit cheaper. You need to input a U.S address to do this. It will still ask you if you are actually in Switzerland because it will recognize your IP address as outside the US. I just continued through with the address change and it worked fine.

As a final note, I have had my Kindle for a year and absolutely love love love it. I travel all the time and buy books on the go and the 3G has never failed me. You won't regret it!

Be aware that some models of Kindle are (or have been) US only, and some are international. Check the model specs very carefully.

Re: Kindle and it's free 3G

I asked for the 3G touch. This seems to be the newest model until the Fire so hopefully ok. If the fire wasn't backlit then i would have gone for that but it seems to be less of an e-reader and more for internet browsing.

Thanks for the responses!

Re: Kindle and it's free 3G

I just want to thank Tehhimora for the info. regarding the delivery.

After looking on amazon.fr (which gives only the french kiala 'point relais' as an option for delivery) I finally decided to order it from US even though the estimated delivery looked like 10+ days (on the FAQ says up to 26 days for the regular shipping and 2 weeks for priority).

The good news is that I received the kindle in 3 days.
I didn't believed that it came right from the US, but the tracking says it did so .

My conclusion: If you don't want to have much hassle with the french/german amazons go for the .com as the time delivery seems not to be a problem (at least for the kindle products).

*Regarding the US version mistake, amazon will make you choose the right one at the checkout.

Re: Kindle and it's free 3G

thread resurrection...

Amazon has now limited 'free' 3G browsing to a measly 50MB per month now. thanks to some stupid hackers (not stupid because they figured out how to tether the Kindle and get unlimited free 3G access, but stupid for advertsing it on the web, so Amazon went and took away the unlimited part)

Still love the kindle though. and 50MB is still good for when you have to check mail and have no other way of doing it ...
