Watching College football in Zurich

Hello all,

I have, indeed, searched before posting. The latest threads on this seem a bit old, so I wanted to see if anyone has new information. This is a bit of a long shot, but... anyone know a place where they show American College Football? A bar-type place, preferably not Hooters?

Specifically, we are hoping to watch Michigan kick some Notre Dame ass on September 4th. If I'm able to figure out the location, I'll also be excited to put together an EF outing. So please also feel free to let me know if you are interested.

Some important points to be taken into consideration :

> Colleges in German speaking Switzerland are "Mittelschulen" and deadly serious places if compared to "colleges" in the USA
> Football here is football (Fussball), but what you have in mind is
American Football (Amerikanischer Fussball) . The thing nearest to American Football is NOT Football, but even if not the same Rugby.

The only more or less US-American restaurant which survived in Zurich is
www.papajoes.ch/
on Limmatquai. They may know a bit more than I do.

A lot more US restaurants were in business here until the end of the Clinton administration but all five or six went out of business in the GWB years.

Politics unfortunately influences gastronomy to an unhealthy extent !

Hey, thanks for the pointers. I will check out Papa Joe's anyway.

It's unfortunate that politics affect the gastronomical choices, but I can definitely understand the lack of interest in American things and stuff these days. Perhaps it will get better slowly.

ESPN America shows live college football. Perhaps they will carry the game live or tape-delayed.

Re: Watching College football in Zurich

Might be difficult; according to this schedule, Michigan play Conneticut on September 4th.

http://www.espnamerica.com/portal/sy...&dateadjust=10&

It's live on ESPN America though, which you can get with the second-cheapest package from Cablecom.

Michigan play the Fighting Irish the following week. TV details aren't on the ESPN America site yet though.

Yes, I definitely meant the 11th. Michigan is playing Connecticut today, in fact, right now.

If you find something I'm in. Zurich's not that far from Lausanne to see a good schellacing of ND. There are a few live feeds on justin.tv of the UCONN game. There might be "official" webcasts of next weeks game.

Re: Watching College football in Zurich

Wollishofner, I'm not sure that fussball or mittelshule have much relevance to American College football?
In my country college would usually mean university and footballers don't wear all that protective clothing but... it's got little to do with the OP's question!

Re: Watching College football in Zurich

Just finished watching UConn @ Michigan. 113'000 at the game! Wow! Bit of a one-sided affair, but a solid opening for the Wolverines. I'm sure we'll see similar plays in our Flag game tomorrow! (Subtle hint - check the EF calendar!)

Re: Watching College football in Zurich

So in light of this thread I'm going to simultaneously challenge the American (and American educated) population and cry out for help.

The challenge has 2 parts:
Challenge Part 1) In light of the second most important game of the the year in the college football season (Michigan ND. (Nobody really cares all that much about the game with our little brother...)), I'm challenging all of my fellow Americans to help show what a proper college football game day experience is like. I'm thinking we barbecue (ok grill...) at a park along the lake up in Zurich (since that seems to be where we're most likely to reach critical mass) then decent on a (somewhat) unsuspecting hotel bar to watch the game. Everyone has to declare support of either Michigan (intelligent folks) or Notre Dame (fools). At the end of the game, the looses buy the next round of beer and has to sing the victors' fight song (Don't kid yourselves, it will be "The Victors").

The request also has two parts:
Request Part 1) Since I'm in Lausanne, and not Zurich. I'm going to need a few locals to help me pull this one together. Suggestions as to where to barbecue, what hotels/bars we might be able to convince to let us watch the game (even if we have to stream it off the net) along with help coordinating everyone is will be greatly appreciated.

The second part is where this gets good...

Challenge Part 2) When the most important game of the year comes around, we do it bigger and better in Lausanne/Geneva. There have to be enough Wolverines and Buckeyes around to pull this off. The rules are the same. Losers sing and by drinks. Heck, I'll even wear a Buckeye jersey if the Wolverines loose...

Request Part 2) I'll have an easier time working on this one; but, I'll still need a fair bit of help pulling this one off. Anyone who's willing to lend a hand will be greatly appreciated.

So, who's in?

If you find a place, let me know. I'd like to sit in and watch the Buckeyes kick Michigan's butt yet another time

Re: Watching College football in Zurich

So I talked to (who am I kidding!? I made my native speaker husband talk to) Papa Joe's and Mr Pickwick's. They do not have NBC, which is where the game will be shown. They sounded very willing to put the game on if it were on ESPN, though. So we'll keep that in mind for the Michigan-Penn State game on October 30th, right Wolverines? Good.

Now, the only place I haven't yet checked is Hooters, argh, I don't want to go there. But I guess I'll check anyway. Anyone willing to make the call since my German-on-the-phone anxiety is making me tremble?

The Hooters manager is an occasional flag football player with us in Adliswil, so no need for ze German.

Bummer. Thanks for checking into things. ND has an exclusive broadcast license with NBC since basically forever.

Anyone know if we might be able to steam it?

Re: Watching College football in Zurich

Eurosports 2 is showing the game in Europe, so find a bar that has Eurosports 2

http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/09/01...t-purdue/61808

You can see this game listed on their schedule as well:

Re: Watching College football in Zurich

And another round of calls begins. I will be all kinds of speaking phone-German by the end of this.

I have already called (and been told to call back later when they are awake by) Mr Pickwick's, Paddy's, Papa Joe's and Hooters. Anywhere else I should call?

Re: Watching College football in Zurich

I'm a umich grad student based in Paris but i'm visiting my boyfriend in Zurich (he's an alum) this weekend. We're also looking for somewhere to watch the UM-ND game. Could you let us know where you decided to go? (I'm used to draggin my French friends to bars in Paris and explaining the game to them or watching by myself at home on espn 360 - it'd be fun to watch in public with some actual fans!)
