Re: The Android pad thread

will there be soon any pad with at least 10" screen with higher resolution than usual 1200x800? It doesn't have to have exactly iPad3's DPI, but something for reading without seeing pixelization (pdfs are sometimes nasty)

You mean like that one:
http://eee.asus.com/en/eeepad/transf...nity/features/

or that one:
http://www.gsmarena.com/acer_iconia_tab_a700-4425.php

Both tabs have a higher pixel density than the Retina Macbook Pro - so pixelation is definitely not going to be an issue there :-)

both have been available for months!

The Nexus 7 is pretty neat. Ever since I've had it, my iPad has been resting in a drawer. The reason being the Nexus' much (much) lower weight.
Of course, Apple will probably release a 7" version as well this fall.

Re: The Android pad thread

A question for those that have used Android tablets and iPads.

Did you find the user interface somewhat clunky? By that I don't mean the added complexity of android, which I quite like by the way, but I recently used one, a very recent Samsung with better processing specs than my iPad, and using the interface was a very jumpy affair. Nothing moved smoothly, everything was jumpy and completely lacking the swish of the iPad. Not to mention the browser failed to render some sites properly, and in the case of digitec it was barely usable.

Overall it gave me the impression that it was a much less powerful device than my iPad, which going by the specs was plainly not true, in fact the opposite was true, the Samsung device was way more powerful. Also given that Samsung manufacture a large number of components, such as processor, that go into the iPad I was even more surprised and disappointed.

The only conclusion that I could draw from this is that Android is becoming bloated and inefficient due to the vast differences in hardware it has to support. Much like windows, but windows 7 did a lot to improve that, or at least make it not so obvious.

I don't know what version of android it was running, but I suspect ICS given that it's recent.

Yeah, that's a highly annoying issue with every version of Android up to and including ICS. It's been fixed with Jelly Bean (Google for "project butter"). The Nexus 7 is very smooth

Yes, Jelly Bean has a much faster interface. They've done a lot of work on the UI code.

Re: The Android pad thread

I'm quite tempted to pick up a Nexus 7 when I'm in Blighty next week, the price is right and I quite fancy a lighter, smaller form factor for reading in bed. However I can't ignore the imminent release of the iPad mini, because my only complaint about the iPad 3 is the bulk.

a 2000x1600 screen would be nice.

the weight/bulk of the original 7" tab was an issue for me which is why i went with the 5" galaxy note in the end.

i'd be happy to get a larger screen tablet at the same weight for home/short journeys and would be willing to sacrifice a lot of battery life to hit a low weight - it is just not comfortable to use a heavy tablet for a long time.

What for? You don't see pixels on full HD 10 inch displays and a higher resolution won't get you more space on the screen. But it will make the pad a lot heavier and hotter.

Just get one and if you end up favoring a smaller iPad (which might not become available for a while anyway) just sell it again. It's in high demand here.

Re: The Android pad thread

does anyone actually play games on these tablets or ipads? not things like angry birds, proper full on games? i tried but just can't get on with the virtual joystick and buttons, I always move my fingers too far out of there range. It seems odd that google are pushing the Nexus 7 as a games machine yet it has no real input buttons etc

Re: The Android pad thread

M electronics is selling the Galaxy Tab 8.9 Wi-Fi 16 GB for 50% OFF

Old price CHF 444, now for CHF 222

The sale should be from 21.08 - 3.09 (in the limits of stock).

Probably clearing stock for the new 10" model.

@slaphead: this review seems to share your experiences:

I'm also wondering if the Nexus 7 can make decent quality VOIP calls over a USB stick internet modem? Are there drivers available for the stick modems?

If the tablet doesn't have a 3G module integrated, then your only other option would be to enable the "Mobile Hotspot" on your phone and then connect the tablets wifi to that. But in that case, you'd just be better off installing a VOIP app directly on your phone rather than the tablet.

you just need to compile the driver into the kernel if it isn't already in there.

I believe you'll quite like it. My iPad is now primarily at work where I use it to display my lesson plans. At home, for browsing the web, reading books etc., the Nexus 7 is really good.
