Nokia N8

It is time for a phone replacement. The Iphone seems to be the obvious choice (to me!), but the new Nokia N8 looks pretty sweet too.

http://www.nokia.ch/produkte/alle-mo...cts&lpos=top_1

Does anyone have this phone yet of have had a chance to play around with it?

Thanks

Re: Nokia N8

I did think about it as I am a big Nokia fan. But one thing which put me off is that the Symbian^3 is going to discontinued and the next generation Nokia smart phone will be on the MeeGo! So we may not be seeing too may apps being added to the Ovi store for this device :-(!
Just my 2 cents and am back to the IPhone 4!!

Re: Nokia N8

Nokia N8:
  • Limited apps and rubbish Ovi Store
  • Still a poor screen resolution in comparison with Android + iPhone 4
  • There's nothing to suggest Symbian v3 won't be another version of a poorly polished dog, and has no real future.
Personally I would avoid like the plague... get a Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire, or iPhone 4 depending on OS preference.

Re: Nokia N8

Thanks for the feedback both. Will probably go to the shops once it is more available, and have a play with all.

I know that HB is keen on his N900, so may also have a look at that - and the Android options..

My vote goes for the HTC Desire. The iPhone 4 is just so expensive!

Re: Nokia N8

I have never been a Nokia fan and hate their SymbianOS. So badly that I rejected a N95 back then I got from my employer... Jako, I'd go for anything that supports whatssapp, so I can finally stop sending you expensive texts

You know that I am all for the iPhone, but the new Blackberries are actually very good as well.

Yeah, despite my usual "avoid Samsung like Gonorrhea" sentiments, it really is an amazing piece of kit. The Hummingbird processor is a complete beast, and the 3D performance is literally almost 3x that of any other device on the market... it can even play 1080p so I hear http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/mobilep...2200389,00.htm

Plus added to this people are already hacking the shizz out of it http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=656

If the US "Samsung Epic" version with QWERTY is released in the EU then I think it may well be my next phone .

I heard rumors that it can be very laggy. Not sure where though.

Re: Nokia N8

It was definitely a fast beast. And I watched a 720p video on it which looked great on the wonderful screen (Samsung is a screen manufacturer so you get the best).

What I really liked is that it plays any video straight, without having to convert to a lower res. Some lesser phones require this.

My experiment with the N900 has been fun, but unless Nokia shapes up with the N9 and provides proper support, I will be happy to move to a nice Android phone like this. I don't use xterm, etc., as much as I anticipated and I can keep the N900 for such nerdy activities, hacking around, and playing old console games.

Re: Nokia N8

There are so many stories and arguments which mobile phone has the better operating systems and downloadable software.

I always have bought Nokia but it looks as if they have lost the market with the smart phones. Not sure is it operating system or useability.

I would hold on a couple more months as there are a lot of new things coming out and I don't think it will be long before the leader shows through.

From where they smell or where you heard?

I read about the lag problem too and apparently there is a fix. And I read about the Iphone antenna problem which can be fixed by putting a sleeve on (doh !) etc etc...

I think the reality is that now a days, because companies push products to the maket faster and faster all of them have faults and non are perfect.

I am a great Mac fan boy but for some reason or another I am just a little reluctant to jump on the Iphone band wagon (although I may end up doing it)

Re: Nokia N8

If you want to stick with Nokia you should wait for the N9 running meego anyways. OS will def be great. The question is whether Nokia is gonna get its act together with the OVI store and general suppport.

Whaat? How close to the screen do i have to be to be able to see that?

iPhone 4 is like 640p on a 3.5inch screen, and your eyes can't resolve that already, apparently.

Whaat? It affects readability of all text in apps, how much page you can fit on an internet page, and the amount of icons on the screne. If you can't tell the difference between 640x360 and 800x480 then your eyes are broken.

EDIT - Ignore the above, I was being dim.

That I can, but 1080p means 1920 x 1080, no?
