digital boxes spy on you and listen to your conversations. maybe to market to you. it is orwellian and it is real. Commies everywhere trying to control you at every move. You cannot trust government and big business. When they work together it is called fascism, and it is not a right wing ideal. It is ultra left just like the Commies and Socialists with their propaganda ministers.

Some people have way too much time (and way too little knowledge about cameras and microphones)...

Re: Google TV

Monkeyboy 76 has hit the nail squarely on the head, I think.

Here in CH, I am currently looking for a digital alternative to analogue TV and finding it very difficult indeed to be able to find a technical set up whereby I can choose for myself precisely just the station(s) that I would like to receive.

Even if I switch to (expensive) cable TV, which I am very loath to do, it looks impossible, because international or local licensing agreements that slice up the profits cake apparently prevent such a personal choice being made. For instance, I would love to watch the upcoming Rugby Union World Cup from New Zealand next September, so I need the right channels just for the period of the World Cup itself; and things like that; or to be able to tune in to the English language Internet TV versions of, say, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, etc.

However, it seems to be impossible here for cartel reasons. Can anyone please tell me reliably and exactly what I must do to get JUST ANY station at all of MY OWN FREE CHOICE here in CH i.e. NOT JUST FROM A TICK-OFF LIST form some local provider. I am even thinking of installing my own dish aerial set-up, as I reckon that Google TV will probably assume that, because the majority of (Swiss) people in, say, the German-speaking part of this country speaks some version of a German-Swiss dialect, then ANY and ALL channels brought in by Google TV from abroad will have to be in the German language i.e. we (minority) English speakers will get German-dubbed American programmes and nothing else, whether we like it or not.

Clearly, one assumes, Google will head for the majority group to make more profit. Is it a case of 'wait and see' or does anyone on the blog know anything more concrete? Thanks in advance for any info that anyone can provide to enable me to get this set up before the World Cup begins! Is there any other way of getting the games on my TV? i don't insist on the full set-up if it is avoidable.

Re: Google TV

Good evening vandals,

If it is just the rugby that you are wanting to see, ITV has got the rights to show the games live [1]. So as long as you can get hold of ITV you should be ok. I have seen other stories on here about people using proxy servers to access the bbc iplayer. You should be able to do the same kind of thing for itv's version.

I gave up and went with cablecom who give a good selection of english channels [2]. You can also find a similar set of channels from Swisscom.

I see from your profile that you are in Luzern. I assume that there will be a few places also showing some of the rugby. Legends (aka Billy's) [3] normally opens for sporting events. Then there is Gracie Kelly’s [4] and also the classic Pickwicks [5].

But the biggest problem is going to be the time difference. Most probably these places will only be open for the latest games. Going with the Cablecom/Swisscom solution they provide you with a PVR, so you can record over night and watch as soon as you wake up. But they will get you to sign up for a one year contract.

Good luck

Re: Google TV

Thank you very much monkeyboy76 .. I shall have a look through your suggested links. (I used to frequent the Lu Pickwick years ago!).

However, I do believe that some of these TV transmission rights may be restrictive. For instance,it could be that the matches are licensed for transmission by ITV in the UK only, say, but not for worldwide circulation by them. I must find out.

However, you have given me a good starting point or two. By the way, WasserwerkZug has a fine set up and a wide choice on its cable TV; but I live in a zone in Ct Lu that is shared between CableCom and Bluewin, both of whom have a choice that is nothing like as good as WWZug's, which is simply not available in my village.

I would be worse off than with my present (a local privately-owned disk antenna) provider! Also, I would like to get Eurosport 1, with the English channel (which I receive now: for both cycle racing and snooker they are first class), plus (new for me) Eurosport 2 and also, if possible, France 3 (the latter also new and also for its rugby). Any ideas on that score? Thanks again and cheers.
