Re: HTC Desire HD

questions as i haven't used HTC android phones before:

- when plugging into USB, does the device show up as a standard mass storage device allowing you to copy files on and off the phone (any restrictions on what can be copied - excluding system files)? i'm particularly interested in easily transferring music and photos on and off the phone. (this is a major annoyance with the iphone)

- email client. does it suport multiple accounts and secure IMAP/SSL (IMAPS) and secure SMTP (TLS).

- does email client allow you to download zipped PDF files and able to unzip and view them on the device and also attach files from the file system (amazingly the iphone can't do this!)

- maps: can you pre-download all maps for, say, europe. i heard it may be limited so a certain amount of pre-downloading.

- SSH support. is there a good SSH client and can the device act as SSH server allowing remote access to the filesystem?

When connecting it via USB, the device offers you several options:

- "Charge Only"
- "HTC Sync"
- Disk Drive (Mass storage mode)
- USB Tethering
- Internet pass-through (the phone uses the PC's internet connection)

Mass storage works like a charm but it'll only mount the micro-SD card (without any access limits). As the card is the main storage area anyway, this isn't an issue. And yes, you can copy your music files easily by hand or sync your iTunes library with a tool (like Salling Media Sync for Mac or Windows).

yes to both, offering multiple settings (peak time, off peak, weekday etc.) for mail fetching intervals. The mail client also support MS exchange accounts out of the box.

Man, you have high expectations :-) I gave this a shot:

- opening zipped PDFs: (to my own surprise): yupp, works like a charm, even if they're in a zipped folder. The ZIP archive is expanded to the "downloads" folder on the memory card

- attaching files: (to my even bigger surprise): yes, however, only in the E-Mail client (which you'll be using anyway, if you require access to several IMAP accounts), not in the Google Mail client (these are two different things, although you can also add GMail accounts via IMAP in the E-Mail client and not use the GMail tool at all). The e-mail client will let you attach any file. It'll give you a list of either a pre-defined file format (e.g. if you choose PDF, it'll show all PDFs on your card) or a list of all files on the card to choose from.
The GMail client (natively) only supports videos and pictures. However, using a free third-party file manager (Astro, for example), you can attach any file using the GMail client as well. You simply choose the file in the file manager and click on "Send", then you choose GMail as means of transport.

on the Desire HD: yes. However, voice-guided off-line navigation will cost you, but it's not very expensive. I paid 55 Fr. for a life-cycle (whatever that means - I guess until the next major software release) navigation subscription. If you don't need voice-guidance, the service is free. The maps are free to download and are offered for virtually the whole planet.
On the 1st gen Desire and most other Android phones (unless the carrier supplied the phone with a 3rd party navi app, like on the Motorola Milestone), you'll have to purchase off-line navigation software from the Android market. There's Navigon, for example.

SSH Clients:
- File transfers: There's FtpCafe (an FTP client that also offers SFTP for systems using RSA/DSA OpenSSH keys)
- Shell access: ConnectBot (gets 5 out of 5 stars in the Market). Full-featured SSH client, can manage simultaneous SSH sessions, can create secure tunnels and can even copy/paste between other applications. It's free.

SSH Server:
I don't know about the quality of the software but there's QuickSSHd in the Market which allows you to do just that. Rooting the device isn't necessary, as long as you're only offering access to the SD-card. As far as I can tell, if you root it, you also get access to the rest of the device. The software costs 1.50 Fr.

Man, after having researched this, it's a slap in the face to see how much of a toy the iPhone is compared to Android.

If anyone has some money left despite the recent tax deadline:

Saturn in Winterthur had 15 DHDs lying around in their showcase this afternoon.

Copilot is awesome, and can be easily had if you know where to look http://apktor.gotoinit.com/

As for mail, K9 mail is also great, and much more powerful than the standard Android email clients I think http://www.androidtapp.com/k9-mail/

I was just giving some examples - I personally have never tried CoPilot or K9 but I'm sure they're good as well

I bought it from Superetrader.co.uk (pre-ordered the Modaco bundle the day it became available).
The speed is great, although I never had any speed-issues with the Desire, either - was always buttery smooth for me since they released Android 2.2 for it.

I had two Galaxy S before and in my opinion, they're much worse devices. For starters, they don't run smoothly without massive tinkering (rooting + applying file-system patches, voiding the warranty) as they contain hardware design problems with the memory system. The build-quality is drastically worse on the SGS. It's completely made of plastic and feels like it falls apart when you pick it up. The DHD is almost entirely made of aluminum and glass. Also, I really didn't like the SGS's Touchwiz UI. It feels unpolished and clunky - much like a product in early beta status. HTC Sense in the current version is very mature and stable.
The only good thing about the Galaxy S is the screen, although it's smaller than the DHDs and has this plasticy feel about it (although Samsung says it's also glass). SAMOLED is great - it's very bright and well-readable outside. However, it has a slightly grainy texture to it. That never bothered me but bugs the heck out of some people. Also, on some SGS devices, the mainboard is dimly visible through the display, also due to poor manufacturing. I'd never recommend the SGS to anyone - not over any other phone - mainly because of the memory design flaw that is present in every unit and with every OS version, including the recently released (and pulled again) 2.2
I bought my first unit when the devices became available. Before some hackers released the lag-fixes for the device, it was completely unusable (it was literally sitting on my desk for about a month). I found the lag-fixes to work well at first but after a while, the lags came back. I then sold it. Because there were no alternatives in terms of screen size, I bought another one after Samsung released their first firmware update and some people reported that the lags were gone. Turned out they were lying - no improvement, so I returned that one.

How much did you pay in import duties etc for that?

67 Fr. in taxes. The whole package cost me about 820 Fr. including UPS shipping and Swiss VAT. It included a Swirl leather case, a car holder, a car charger and 6 screen protectors. It was also supposed to contain a desk charger but they forgot to pack that - have filed a complaint.

According to some posts on Digitec, Mediamarkt Sihlcity apparently has quite a few looking for a new home (at least that was the case yesterday)

My Sony Ericsson walkman series phone just froze today. Tried a lot of stuff to get it running but nothing worked

On the brighter side, I started looking for new phones, stumped upon this thread and many other reviews on the internet.
Had I known it this morning, I would have gone to Media Markt right away. I will be heading there tomorrow evening to check if they have any, otherwise I will order it online.

I'd add 50CHF for a pristine phone. They come with a 2 year warranty so it's a much safer bet than a jesusphone. I've never understood why old iPhones are worth so much.
