HTC Desire HD

Anyone getting one? I pre-ordered it as soon as I saw the specs. I had an HD2 some time ago and have been sorely missing its screen ever since I sold it (because the rest of the phone utterly sucked).

Ordered mine from here:

http://android.modaco.com/content/an...-superetrader/

They're running a promo with superetrader.co.uk - you get quite a nice little bundle for around 800 CHF (including Swiss tax and shipping). And they're oftentimes the first ones to get the phones. And no, I'm not affiliated with them.

Anyway - the phone looks rock solid. 4.3" SLCD screen, new & massively improved multitouch digitizer (finally!), tons of internal memory, FM radio, brand new Snapdragon processor with massively improved graphics power (check out the benchmark link below) and lower power consoumption. Plus it comes with a new version of Sense that has cloud-integration with HTC's new online service (allowing to locate + remote-wipe the phone, like Apple's Mobile Me), has a fast-boot mode that starts the device in less than 5 seconds (quite impressive, really, check out the video link below), a new map service that allows you to preload up to 100mb of map data before leaving for a walk. You can also use this service to navigate, but that'll cost extra.

Benchmarks:

http://www.areamobile.de/handys/2591...hd/testbericht

Fastboot:

Multitouch (proof :-):

costs about 150 Fr. less than the iPhone 4 if you order it from digitec (without a contract).

The iPhone 4 is 769 and the Desire HD is 759 on digitec

I'm more thinking how much I'd get for my desire which has been dropped once. Maybe 350-400 francs....tops....then another 350 to get the desire.

For what? A bigger screen and more memory, updated processor with a much better GPU (for all the android shitty games )

I'm pretty sure the Desire will get the new HTC sense too. So I can't really justify the extra cost. But if I was rolling around in cash I would definitely get it

If you choose the bottom-end iPhone - yes, those numbers are right.
Of course, if your already have a Desire, you'll have to decide for yourself if the upgrade is worth it. I personally want the much bigger screen because I do a lot of reading on the phone.

I agree the GPU's merits are doubtful, considering the fact that there aren't any decent games for Android :-)

ahw man, I hoped you'd wait! I don't think Orange takes them back. Swisscom has a 14-day return policy

Re: HTC Desire HD

I am between this and buying the Samsung Galaxy S. This seems to have a slightly bigger screen, better camera but less internal memory. All the other other specs seem to be about the same.

Am I missing anything else? The Samsung is CHF100 cheaper with digitec.

Desire HD has more RAM. Will come with Froyo out the box and will get future updates quicker than the Galaxy S.

And it's not a samsung. That's got to count for something Plus isn't there the issue with the Samsung Galaxy having a terrible filling system and being very laggy and require a root and a 3rd party fix to be fast?

Re: HTC Desire HD

Hmph, pretty meagre battery... 1230 mAh vs 1500 mAh on the Galaxy S. Id be a bit worried about that with a power-sucking screen of that size.

Its a shame also that with such a large screen that they didnt take the opportunity to bump up the resolution a little to 1024... but I giess that will come on the next-gen of Android superphones.

Re: HTC Desire HD

Available mid-october from digitec. 669 sFr. without contract.

On a completely separate and unrelated note, my swisscom contract is ends at the end of October.

Fancy that.

The SGS is a battey hog - it has a much larger battery than the 1st gen Desire but battery life isn't any better. Apart from that, the new Snapdragon uses significantly less power than the predecessor. I'm willing to bet that the battery life will be more or less the same for the HD as it was for the 1st gen, which is perfectly fine.

Yes, the screen res could have been higher - but I suspect this isn't a technical issue. The fact is: if the apps don't support the higher resolution, they'll look butt ugly. Happens on the iPhone 4 all the time - older apps look crappy. Android isn't there yet - and the resolution the HD has now is very good.

Compared to the SGS, the HD is a much better phone. It's significantly faster, doesn't have the horrid lag issues, has a bigger screen, comes with all the bells and whistles of the new Sense UI, cloud integration incl., and the build quality is ages better. The only thing that's absent is the front-facing camera. While I can see that this will be a turn-off for some people, I personally couldn't care less.

Re: HTC Desire HD

This is definitely my entry phone into the world of Android, all the previous phones were lacking in one aspect or the other including the original Desire which IMHO is way inferior to the iPhone 4.

However if HTC had the marketing smarts of Apple, they could have hijacked the iPhone 4 launch before people started getting locked into 12-24 month contracts.
