I have been using iTunes Store here in Switzerland since 2005, I have purchased a lot of music, movies, rentals, ibooks, apps, etc... and never had a problem.

Are you sure your account was suspended for excessive purchasing? Seems counter intuitive that they would cut off a high volume paying customer?
I wasn't even a high-volume paying customer - I got back from the States that summer where I had bought a ton of iTunes gift certificates. After I had charged-up my account with those and started buying movies and series, I received an e-mail from Apple, telling me that it's against their terms of service to download out-of-market products and that I should stop doing so. I ignored them - and about 2 weeks later they told me that my account had been suspended because I was in violation of their TOS. I have since been unable to use the Apple ID I had locked in that account for purchasing from the Swiss store as well.

So I pretty much gave up and resorted to buying my music from Amazon.de and to downloading my TV series from rapidshare. If they don't want my money, I guess I don't have another choice.

I'm not alone, either - a co-worker of mine had the same thing happen to his account a couple weeks later.

Re: Apple TV from the US, will Netflix still work?

Was your account already established on the Swiss iTunes Store or the US iTunes Store? My account is established on the US iTunes Store only, I use an address in the US for registration and a US-based credit card registered to the same address. My neighbors are German, and they have a US iTunes account and they use iTunes Gift Cards to top up, they also have not experienced any problems. I know several others who do the same.

How many gift cards? Total amount? That has triggered the attention probably. I bought 100 + 50 US$ gift cards and had no problems so far with itunes/appleTV from Switzerland.

Hi all,

So I am thinking about buying Apple TV for the variety of English programs, and other things that the TV box offers, but I am wondering if the Netflix subscription will still work, even though the TV will be loacted here in Switzerland... I know when I wanted to rent a movie via download/stream from Netflix it wouldn't let me because I was out of the US. I didn't know if Apple TV would be something different... Does anyone know? Any and all advise/knowledge would be helpful.

Thanks

You could subscribe to www.vpnaccounts.com. $14.95/mo and you can set up your computer to access a US-based VPN, which will then allow you to stream video from American broadcasters' webpages, Hulu and Netflix.

I bought my AppleTV in CH, but my iTunes account is a US account. You can switch the realm of your account on iTunes quite easily just by managing your account information. I don't know if you lose anything though, and I do know you can't do it if you have a rented movie on your computer. I think it's a personal choice if you go this route. Obviously there's advantages to having a US iTunes account, and there are also disadvantages.

Streaming = unblock-us.com. I pay CAD 4.99 a month for the service and have been using it for almost a year now. Haven't had any issues with the service or shut down. - Of course for Netflix you have to have a US address to go along and pay for the streaming service.

Since many of you guys are expats and have big companies back home, you can often use your company's network for a VPN--provided it doesn't annoy your employer's IT party poopers. But there are a variety of I.P. masking clients out there in case you're looking for alternatives.

never? Even if it ever became available, which is highly unlikely, it would only have a handful of English-language movies; like all the other commercial VoD offerings here.

Re: Apple TV from the US, will Netflix still work?

Hi - wondering if you have a service provider other than cablecom? I tried unblockus (I have cablecom), and got the following message:

Quote:
Transparent Proxy Detected (4)

Unfortunately our service is not compatible with your provider at this time. Please check following article: http://portal.unblock-us.com/knowled...yarticle&id=62
You can try to cleanup browser cache and restart your computer, because sometimes similar issue can be caused by browser bugs, but it's very rare.

You can use a VPN service/software to block the ip address of your computer (or appear to be in the US) so Netflix will work from a computer. However with the Apple TV (and the Wii) you can't run the VPN software on it and it directly connects to your router. You need a router that handles the VPN directly but this is not a function available on a typical 'home' router.

Dan

We just got Apple TV for Christmas. I need a VPN router it seems besides the VPN connection. We have Swisscom TV. Can I get a second router and do Netflix through the router and leave the Swiss Com router as it is to it's own stuff?

I'm a complete newbie to this VPN stuff but I know my way around computers and digital etc.,

Yes, most DVD based entertainment systems are region coded, including video games. If you have a US bought Wii, PS2/3 or XBOX and it uses standard DVDs, then any games you buy locally will not play in that machine and vice versa. I do not think the same applies for Blu-Ray discs. I purchased Blu-Ray discs through Amazon USA and they play in my PS3, but those were movie discs, not games.
The PS3 is not region code blocked for games, I'm playing Madden NFL and NCAAF games bought in the US on a PS3 purchased in Germany, but PS3's are region locked for movies.

In order to use Netflix you need a subscription with a U.S. based VPN provider (and probably some router configuration skills). Fortunately, the U.S. iTunes store doesn't apply such restrictions (yet!) so anyone can buy a handful of gift cards at Duane Reade and redeem them to her/his account. I just got a brand new Apple TV 2 and it works great renting movies and TV shows using those gift cards in Switzerland.

Does anyone know whether I can buy the iTunes gift card sold here in Switzerland and upload them to my niece's Canadian iTunes account to buy Canadian tv shows, rent movies from Apple? She allows me to share her account and we can watch any of her Canadian purchases here in Switzerland. She could recharge her account and we pay her back but that's a lot of hassle. I prefer to look after all that ourselves.

Thanks

In MediaMarkt in Germany, there is a big sign next their iTunes Gift Cards:
"These Gift Cards do not work in Switzerland! They only work in Germany!"

This implies that the iTunes Gift Cards are region and/or country specific.

Re: Apple TV from the US, will Netflix still work?

I can highly recommend StrongVPN. If you want all of the devices in your household to stream Netflix, Hulu, etc. buy one of the Sabai routers sold through StrongVPN. They come pre-programmed and work wonders. You can switch back and forth to your Swiss IP. In addition, StrongVPN has a U.S. & U.K. package if you desire any U.K. native BBC programming.

Caveat...I set this up and purchased prior to arrival in Switzerland. If you care for HD quality you need 5mb/s download...the StrongVPN servers have been able to match my fast internet.

Happy customer!

Re: Apple TV from the US, will Netflix still work?

If your account is american, you can make use of all their american services, no matter where you are. The only problem with this is that you need to either use an american credit card or an american itunes card. Netflix, on the other hand, won't work because, unlike itunes, it cares where you are because of streaming copyright laws.
