I live in a flat with a few others, I assume (must check) that we pay billag for the tv and internet but that would be for the "household"
That's right.

Quote:
Die Empfangsgebühren werden pro Haushalt bezahlt, nicht etwa pro Gerät. Familien, Wohngemeinschaften oder Paare, die im selben Haushalt leben, bezahlen die Gebühren nur einmal.
The fees are paid per household, not per device. Families, shared apartments or couples who live in the same household, pay the fee only once.

Ok. now i'm really confused. I live in a flat with a few others, I assume (must check) that we pay billag for the tv and internet but that would be for the "household" (which is how I thought it worked like in Ireland). Are you saying that we each need a seperate licence for our mobile phones!?
Nope, don't worry!

Once you're registered with BILLAG, this is valid for the complete household/all persons living in that household.

There is no separate licence, only Radio and TV.

Edit: or as per Mirfields post above ;-)

Re: A weird radio fine

Uffffff, I am so furious
My story is as banal as you can imagine. I had the billag guy, but he did not even need to enter the apt because my swisscom modem is just at the entrance. And now I ve got the 300 CHF penalty for not declaring the Internet as a radio receiver. But I have never listened to the radio through Internet and I even forgot that it can do it!
In our household we have 25 devices which can receive radio - 2 iphones, Ipad, cable TV, and so on. Is it enough to pay one billag for all that?

Pff.. that shucks... I was lucky ,as I got away due to my non-feigned naivité..

But yes - one registration per household will cover ALL devices within and for all people that reside in that apartment/house.

I wouldn't do that until they come.

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

Technical question:

I don't have a radio (seriously) but my UPC box has a radio section which I don't use (if it has any relevance). I'm ok to pay the TV license but not the radio in addition.

Is this OK I wonder?

It does not make any difference, you have to pay both.

I also believe you have internet at home which already by itself qualifies you as as radio and TV receiver.

Really? I had a quick look at Billag's web site (unfortunately not available in English) and I understood that to qualify not only you had to have an Internet line but ALSO:

For radio: to have a media player application (e.g. Mediaplayer, Realplayer) installed.

For tv: to have a media player application installed as well as to have a subscription (free or paid for) to access the contents.

Are you speaking on experience? I have seen no evidence of any legal procedings initiated by Billag so far.
reference: https://www.billag.com/web/de/billag.html

They write that they work with a budget of CHF 1'300'000'000 per year!

1 million people each year are "fined" (Mahnung).

60'000 people are taken to the debtors court each year.

Just to clear matters, you need to register if you own equipment which is capable of receiving radio or TV programmes.

In Germany you have to pay for a car radio, but here it seems to be free...

If you have a TV, doesn't matter if it's new or not, you have to pay for TV license,

There are only about 4 million households in Switzerland.

Does this mean about a quarter of them aren't paying their Billag?

Bilag

We moved to Switzerland a long time ago and at first we had no TV. About a year ago we got a TV so our kids can watch DVDs and so TV was never hooked. Now about two weeks ago a guy came over and asked my wife questions about whether we own a TV. She told him that we do and that it exists purely for the kids' watching of the DVDs.

I get a bill for 733 CHF a week later - billing us for the year of TV use. I seriously do not get this. Is there a place to complain about it/ to contest the bill? Or any future bills for that matter. I mean I can get rid of TV - we do not have the use for it anyhow, the kids end up watching DVDs on laptop. But paying 733 CHF to satisfy some idiotic rule seems excessive to me. Did anyone have any exeprience with this? Or does anyone know what is to be done in this situation.

Sorry, you have to pay, unless you have no TV, Tadio, computers, or cell-phones.

Re: Bilag

With Bilag, having the TV and the plug is enough. You pay for the access, not for the use.
If you want to be off the hook, you need a house/flat where there is nowhere to plug the TV in (very rare) and even then, they want the money if you have internet.

Don't even need that.

With DVB-T, bob's your uncle!

Usually, we disagree and like disagreeing on most things, but this time, I believe you without restriction: I have no idea what a DVBthingie is. I trust you (I'll be right back, I have googling to do)
