In my contract it says that both TV w. satellite channels and Internet are included. Do I still have to pay the Billag if they come to me? I mean, one could argue that it should be covered by the landlord (that argument is not valid in Sweden/England though)
Yes. Your cable rental charges and Billag are entirely different creatures.

You are liable for Billag, not your landlord.

This is for reception of cable TV channels, and covers the cable TV company's fees for the cable connection. You only pay this if the landlord provides you a cable connection.

Yes, you must pay Billag. Billag is the radio & TV Tax, paid to the government, used to fund Swiss TV and Swiss Radio. You pay this regardless of how you receive your radio and TV signal. It is totally separate to the cable TV connection charge.

Re: Billag Visiting

Does Billag have access to Swisscom/Cablecom/Sunrise etc. customer data?

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

BILLAG is just too expensive from my point of view. Charges for TV/radio fair enough, but why has it be so much?

Because we run 2 channels for 500'000 people (Ticino) and another 2 channels for 1.5 million people (Romandie) and because the SRG boss made 621'000 Francs in 2010.

No, it's because there are 170 transmitting stations in Switzerland, that transmit ALL radio and TV programs receivable in CH (and not just SRG programs, all private stations as well).

Personally, I never watch DRS, so I'd be more than happy not to pay for the stuff on DRS, but I do watch TSI and RSI, and most transmitting stations ARE north of the Alps, so I'd be happy not to pay for those as well.

However, it would be bad for business.

You may not like it but TSI and TSR are heavily subsidized by DRS area. It's not only Billag. All the advertising revenue DRS generates goes to SRG and is split.

If it weren't for all these subsidies Billag in Ticino would be a couple of thousand a year and much lower in german speaking Switzerland and possibly not even needed as advertising could sustain DRS.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be any subsidies but 2 fully fledged channels for 500'000 people is a luxury and needs to be paid for.

Actually Ticino is only 336'000 people, less than Zurich. This is 4% of the population. It gets 22% of the revenue though.

Billag

Can anyone help me understand Billig? I can't understand the man who came to my house asking me to sign documents and I thought we already paid our bills for television. Many thanks!

If, like me, you have no television at all, let them know - there is a different (lower) rate if you only have radio.

Re: Billag

More than a month ago, I proactively sent in a form to Billag so they could send us a bill so we don't have to deal with worrying about anyone coming to our door. And I haven't gotten anything. This seems like a totally inefficient way to collect money.

If you have a computer, or even a smartphone, Billag can, and will, claim you can receive television and radio through those devices, and charge you accordingly.

Like I said- resistance is futile.

It's a stupid tax. The ability to view versus use versus subscription to a provider versus over-the-air transmission.

If I'm watching over-the-air then, fine, tax me. But then take out all of the bloody advertisements.

But if I'm paying for a service, be it through my 3G provider, my cable provider, or my satelite radio provider, then bugger the $#*@ off!!!! Why should I have to pay twice for it, which is essentially what Billag is asking us to do.

It's bloody archaic and duplicative. If they really want this tax, then roll it into the monthly bill with my service provider, or add it into the cost of televisions and radios and other devices that receive signals. But seriously... why does Billag even exist???? What purpose does it serve? Why not just shut the whole thing down????

Re: Billag

While it has not been officially communicated from Billag or in fact been completely resolved, Parliament duscussed in the last few months how to improve Billag and the resultution they came up seems to be to scrap the whole "collecting-system", where scary KGB-People sit in your garden hedge to find out if you watch television late at night and just make it compulsory for everyone to pay a flat fee, if they have television or not. This way they could save millions on training cost for their army of spies which have to go through a 24month course in close-combat, infiltration techniques and air-raids in a three part course set in Sibiria, Papaua New-Guinea and Southern Algeria. Furthermore there would also be more peple paying as you couldnt pretend that you didnt have television or radio or power and a sewage system and in fact communicated to the rest of the world by scraping symbols with a stone pen into wax-tables.

To sum it up, with the change in system they estimate that everyone would have to pay about 100.- less a year for the same non-existant service which is at least some good news.

Not sure. I know people who refused to pay for years and haven't had any trouble.

However, also the first person to ring on our doorbell when we moved int our house was a creepy man with a bald head and mirrored sunglasses and a long coat asking me: "Do you have a televison?", to which I answered: "yes, but its still in the box!" So they are onto us!!!

Re: Billag

You could save yourself a bit of time if, instead of posting the question on here, you write 'billag' in the search box and just see the 30 threads come tumbling out with information on the subject.

I wouldn't go so far as to say you would save other members' time too, as I'm sure most of them take a malevolent delight in informing others of the Billag rulings.
