Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

We got a knock at the door today from a Billag guy who explained the concept to us very politely since we had no idea . He also mentioned that it would cost around CHF 470 a year (from the time we moved in max 5 years previous as is the Swiss law) and since we had internet we were still liable to pay even if we did not have a TV or radio as we could easily stream it through the internet. So not a very good Saturday . Has anybody else had a visit?

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

For those who have no TV, but internet. Point 3 of the FAQ is the important bit, it says that you have to register with Billag if you are registered with an IP-TV provider (e.g., Zattoo, Teleboy, etc).

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

If you read some pages back, we stated the same...Only internet=radio
But with the new law (like in Germany) everyone needs to pay the full package

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

Quick note - I am moving out of Switzerland in August and was able to sucessfully contact Billag on only pay a portion of the total yearly Billag fee. They adjusted the invoice and sent me a new one in the mail.

The new law has not even been approved yet so it could still change or be abandoned. Also there will likely be a referendum about that law (if it gets approved by parliament) so it's pointless to talk about a hypothetical future law that quite possibly might never happen.

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

Good news NOT

The Federal Communications Dept. (DETEC) has extended the Billag contract until 2017 !

Billag pulls in CHF 1.3 Billion per year.

The attached article (in FR) talks about the project that is in front of the Parliament at the moment that would mean that everyone would have to pay. This would potentially open up another method of collecting the CHF.

It's interesting that the article also mentions that there might be a transition period during which you can continue not paying if you don't have a TV.

I'd still prefer they abolished the whole thing altogether though.

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

I have not so typical question...

Billag rules say that I need to pay licence for any device that is able to receive TV programmes... so question here is, would I still need to pay for TV that:
1. Has physically remove TV tuner (hence cannot receive any TV programmes)
2. Is used purely as computer screen

(whole idea comes from fact that I want big screen and TVs are MUCH cheaper than commercial pc displays)

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

For information, I received an e-mail from billag customer care saying that in cases:
- If I have a TV with analog only tuner (so not capable of receiving TV singal on it's own)
- If I physically will remove a TV tuner from TV, hence device will not be able to receive any TV signale

There is NO need to pay TV license... happy days

Monday, monday...happy day. Only.

Look their website long rules, you'll see that you will need to pay even if you have a device able to receive internet, including a smartphone.
Same as for radio, anything which can receive, you're in- think car, mobile phone, etc...

So let's stick to gloomy day!

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

I do have internet, and I DO pay for radio, this is question about getting a bit TV and making a screen only and not paying for that on top of what I already pay.

TV without TV tuner is NOT a device via which you can watch TV programmes, that's the thing.
(Ofcourse it can be if you attach some extra device to it, but then a normal PC screen can be too)

Okay, so you don't have to register the TV if it is not receiving signal, but you still have to pay Billag because you could use your computer to listen to the radio or watch TV. So...why not just use the TV?

If you can watch television on your computer, tablet or mobile phone, you must register for television reception if you have an account (including a free one) with an internet television (IP-TV) provider.

Do you see "tuner" here?
You're getting confused-

So yes, a screen without tuner, can't receive- but you surely uses internet one way or another, so you're indirectly screwed.

Mind you there are exceptions

As per @teco, I do NOT have ipTV accounts, belive it or not I think watching TV is a waste of time As I said, I have internet, laptop and radio in a car, phone etc, so I pay for radio, and that's ok, I just do not want to pay for something that I do not use, not intend to use, nor need at all.
