hello! regarding billag, even though i don't have a tv, i do have the internet. i am not signed up to any tv channel online so it's not a 'receiving device'. billag say that's fair enough, and i will not therefore pay tv reception fees, but they do say i must pay for radio reception, and that everyone who has internet must pay radio reception. presumably they're correct but i always prefer to consult my counsel of advisors before signing anything. that's you guys by the way. are they correct?
If you have radio receiving capabilities, i.e. internet, you pay.

Even Trevor Bayliss, who lives in a cave, with no electricity, has to pay ...... and that's not a wind-up.

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

My Trevor Bayliss analogy was merely meant to demonstrate, that it's almost impossible to avoid the Billag radio charge, in this gadget driven age.

Even without electricity or batteries, it is possible to still use a radio, so you need a pretty convincing story to prove that you are unable to, or wont, use a radio.

Apart from that, do you know how costly it is to source old British 45's from the '70s and '80s?

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

It was completely unexceptionable fact for me 4 years ago when I first heard about Billag and we were discussing every day during lunches about why we have to pay and how to avoid. Now, well, I blindly pay yearly.. and the reason for this payment is still ridiculous. Pay as you go.... and even you don't go

Yes, Billag is an exceptionably objectivable tax. The sooner it's lumped into general taxation revenues, the better.

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

Since, in previous place, thanks to Billag and cable tv included in the rent, I've seen bits and pieces of a porn movie "9 songs" on SRF1, after moving to a new place I haven't made any cable subscription and said to the state-provided "entertainment".

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

The state TV uses Billag money to provide a mediocre entertainment and competes with commercial TV stations in the race to the bottom.
When I think that the highway vignette is 40, and Billag is 10x more expensive, I wonder how wasteful this whole operation is - CHF1.3B - if divided by 7kx12 - a median salary - one gets more that 15k people who could be on the public payroll for that kind of money. I don't see that much of their original programming to warrant such a tax.

Why? Why should I fund your evening entertainment?

Perhaps you'd like to fund mine? I've have a bottle of Cabernet sauvignon, please.

The NoBillag people did a calculation that if over a lifetime you put the same money in a 3rd pillard fund you'll have 100,000 when you retire.

Is a lifetime's subscription to this tosh worth saying byebye to 100K?

It also provides the infrastructure for the broadcasting of the competing commercial and foreign stations.

Why can't they pay for it with advertising revenue and a subscription for those who want it.

It's supply and demand. If they don't get enough revenue this way and increasing subscription rates causes a fall off in demand then they really need to look at their product and business model a bit more closely.

And with everything being transmitted by IP these days, shouldn't the need and hence the costs of a dedicated infrastructure be rapidly declining towards zero?

It takes me only two or three clicks for example, to tune into a local radio station from Patagonia, Pyong Yang or Vladivostock.

How much Billag money is going into making that possible?

Not my evening entertainment -- I don't own a TV, nor watch television.

But on the subject of consumption taxes, it's not always practical to adopt a user-pays approach. For example, ideally, parents should be taxed extra to pay for schools, whereas the reality is that children generate tax breaks for their parents; now there's a worthy target for the user-pays lobby!

I think the unjust, inefficient and wasteful collection method that is the Billag system should be scrapped and taken over by the Federal government, paid for out of general revenues, since nearly everyone consumes radio or TV broadcasts in Switzerland. The cost per taxpayer should fall as a result. Yes, a handful of people (me included) would be disadvantaged, but you can't please all the people all the time.

This is, of course, the proposal currently going through parliament.

(My post was more a celebration of the new-found word "unexceptionable". I like it!)

Not quite.

What parliament wants is to keep Billag as collection agency but abolish the opt out for non consumers.

This is the worst of both worlds as you have a for-profit private agency with a poor track record on cost efficiency granted a monopoly on collecting what are effectively taxes.
