Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

Things are not looking good for Billag, or whatever they're going to be called soon.

The movement to abolish the horrible system is gaining traction.

According to the latest survey, 47% wantv to see compulsory fees abolished. 37 % want to see them retained.

The proposition to make Billag mandatory was accepted yet now a majority is against that. Perhaps representative for the population isn't the same as representative for the voters.

Not really.

Last time round it was a question of "we don't like paying, but if we must pay, then everybody else should pay too"

This time its a question "we don't like paying,so get stuffed"

Two subtly different questions.

I expect there will be a Gegenvorschlag that massively slashes the amount to be payed, which is precisely what opponents have been demanding all along but so far the government has said is impossible. The Gegenvorschlag will win and SRG will wake up and see they've been thrown under the bus.

So far the parliament did not really discuss the Gegenvorschlag (counter proposal to be voted on by the people)

Gegenvorschlag: Houshold based billing of max CHF 200 per year. Only private household will pay. (Today also hotels, offices, shops, and any other workplaces has to pay.)

There are ~3.6 Mio households which would result in 720 Mio of collected fees. (2016, 1'368.7 Mio from which 1'240 Mio went to the SRG )
https://www.bakom.admin.ch/bakom/en/...tion-fees.html
https://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/de/home...haushalte.html

Non surprisingly the National Council is against it (August 2016) and did not propose a Gegenvorschlag
https://www.admin.ch/gov/de/start/do...-id-63216.html

Council of the States is against initative and did not even discuss a Gegenvorschlag (March 2017).
https://www.nzz.ch/schweiz/gebuehren...ssen-ld.149925

The traffic and communication commission of the National Council is against Initiative and Gegenvorschlag :
https://www.srf.ch/news/schweiz/kein...lag-initiative
https://www.parlament.ch/press-relea...017-07-04.aspx

1st part of discussion in the National Council was September 14, 2017
http://www.20min.ch/schweiz/news/sto...hlag--13793174

Next discussion in the National Council will be Monday September 25, 2017

Here all details on parlament.ch

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

I personally think the first question is more relevant. The system now is like "you are caught by Billage, you pay (suck) forever wherever you move". Apparently, the burden is only born by part of people whereas others just free-ride.

e.g. I shared a flat with someone before and we got "caught". I signed my name and now we both move to different places. The bill just follows me while my ex-flatmate pays nothing. Usually it is those who are more responsible that have to pay, which I find quite unfair.

and this is your reason for thinking Bilag should be retained?

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

Th discussion in the national council on Monday September 25, 2017 did not result in a Gegenvorschlag. It is n now all or nothing. let see how that will play out.

Federal council Doris Leuthard promised that license fee will be lowered "way under CHF 400". Whatever that will mean.

No. I think Bilag should not be retained for whatever reasons they claimed.
Just saying, if someone insists keeping Bilag, to make the claim marginally more reasonable, a public service that benefits everyone should be paid by everyone.

At least is shows she is taking the threat seriously.

That in itself is a change in the right direction.

It only benefits me if I go and buy a TV.

Totally with you. Paying for sth. that could have benefited sounds not fair either. Maybe a tax imposed on the purchase of radio/TV could be more reasonable?

Of course.

But the official government position (not that I agree) is that even people who don't watch TV benefit as we all benefit from living in a succsesful economy and democracy which is enabled by good education and well informed people.

I was just about to get a new TV this weekend, but decided to postpone it for a week, to scout around a bit. Now my question is
1) Do I have to pay tax only if I buy a new TV? What If I get a TV from a friend, do I still pay the tax? Please note that I have already subscribed for a Cablecom connection, so does this help.
TV or No TV, one have to pay Billag if u use internet or Radio. But may be if u use sim card based internet then perhaps u can skip Billag by saying u dont even have smart phone leave alone TV. Then u might need old Nokia mobile phone to impress the Billag man that u r not cheating.. Lol

You don't impress the Billag man with what equipment you have.

You impress him by understanding that for every new client he signs up he gets measly 22 CHF as a commission. Not per month or per year. A one off payment from Billag. That's it.

Make sure he understands from the beginning that this conversation, whatever outcome it's going to take, is going to cause him more pain that most people would go through to earn 22 CHF. And he has to pay tax on that. It's a cruel world.

Make sure you tell him that at the beginning of your talk. The first couple of times I didn't and then he got angry at me for wasting his time. But if you tell him up front that that's what you're going to do, he has only himself to blame. It's only fair.

He won't believe you of course. But he'll believe you when you're done.

Did I tell you that I never had the same Billag man call twice?

I must have saved Billag from having to fork out quite a few 22 CHFs.

I must write to them some day to ask for a percentage of what I saved them.

Or maybe not.

I remember my early Nokia having a built in FM radio.
Even the non 3G ones.
But it's been a while since I abandoned Nokia when their attempts at smart phones failed badly some years back.
