UK phone handset in Switzerland?

Just a quickie to ask if a UK home phone handset should work here in CH?

We have plugged in our UK walkie phone here using the cable from an ancient wired phone that the house owners kindly left for us to use and I get no dial tone. Could it be that the cable is an old design? (the Swisscom engineers laughed at how old the phone was!)

Can anyone confirm if a UK phone should or should not work when plugged in with the right cable here in CH?

Re: UK phone handset in Switzerland?

From the UK cable is there a plug into the phone or is it hard wired? Ie can you disconnect the wire from the phone, if you can then disconnect the wire and get a Swiss equivalent which should plug into your phone. You should be able to get a 'Swiss wire' at Interdiscount ! If it is hard wired, ie the wire goes into the phone without a connector, you probably have to work on the socket side via an adaptor.

Re: UK phone handset in Switzerland?

Sorry, I must have been inclear.
The cable that I have tried is a Swiss cable (big L-shaped connector). It is from a Swiss phone left for us by the house owners.
Yes, the cable can be disconnected at the handset end (RJ11). I removed the UK cable to use the Swiss one.

My question is more detailed I guess. Is there a fundamental difference between a phone used in the UK and one for here (beyond the physical plug on the end of the cable)

Hey, thanks for the speedy reply though!

Re: UK phone handset in Switzerland?

In all honesty I cannot remember, Some phones are three wire, some two but we have a number of UK phones connected to our Swiss line! Without any issues.

Re: UK phone handset in Switzerland?

Reading the above, am I correct in that you; (1) removed the original cable which was a BT connector to an RJ11 type and then; (2) replaced it with a cable that had a Swiss telephone plug (new type) to RJ11?

It could be due to the wiring on the RJ11 side of the phone. Most phones use the two centre pins to carry the line, however on some older British phones and modems, it can be the two outer pins instead.

If the original cable isn't cross wired (i.e. left most pin on the BT connector is connected to the left most pin on the RJ11 side, etc.) then I really suspect that it's the what I said above.

Re: UK phone handset in Switzerland?

Hi Siggy it has been a while since I had this problem. From memory the dialup modem (yes those were the days) worked but the phone did not, and I think it was to do with which pins in the RJ11 connector where being used. The phone only had two and I took the connector apart to change them. Something like UK was pin 2 and 5, and Swiss uses pins 3 and 4 in the middle of the jack. Good luck!

Re: UK phone handset in Switzerland?

If everything is like it was in the 90's, the wiring in the cable is different.

Similar to what i read in a previous reply, I remember buying a modem in the uk and I had to switch two wires in the cable or something like that in order for it to work in Italy back in the days..

Re: UK phone handset in Switzerland?

My understanding is that a UK phone on the Swiss network can work but it won't ring. There is a mod you can do so it will ring, I think it's just one or two wires that have to be conncted differently and then it will work. But don't ask me how to do it.
