Re: New MacBook Air [Thread Split]

the real reason is so they can produce an i3 version 18 months later and make you all upgrade again

Re: New MacBook Air [Thread Split]

It's the same reason the Lenovos have the crappy intel integrated gpus and no nvidia options on their thinkpad edge. You can go amd but their cpus draw way too much power.

I couldn't resist. Ordered this morning.

13"/2.13GHz/4GB/256GB

I hate apple so don't expect me to get suddenly all fluffy on the Apple threads now.

My girlfriend needed a new laptop...so I've also ordered a MBA for me 5 min ago, with the same specs as HashBrown, and like that she can inherit the very old 2009 MBP...

This little thing with Lion and the new Apps store is gonna be a bl** dy good toy!

Don't forget with OpenCL enabled apps, the GPU is a third available processor on a Snow Leopard system.

Yeah I knew that when making the comment.
Yeah, but Lion isn't introducing restrictions on what can be installed, including Flash.

those restrictions will come as certain as the Amen in church.
Unless Sun / Oracle decide to release their own version of Java for it, Lion already comes with restrictions: good luck running OpenOffice.org or jDownloader without a JRE.

I'm not surpised that Lion isn't causing more of a stir in this fanboi country, considering the fact that the Swiss also voted in favor of getting their finger prints stored in a central database just for the heck of it. Switzerland must be the only country in the world where a majority of the people choose to cripple their civil rights and personal liberties further and further voluntarily and on a regular basis.
therefore Switzerland is the ideal playground for Jobs and his henchmen, who are all about crippling possibilities, the freedom of choice and censorship.

my opinion on the MBA: it's hardware left-overs from 2007 packaged in a good-looking but not user-serviceable air-tight casing that costs an arm and a leg. in other words: three years old poop in a sealed robi-dog bag wig an Apple logo on it. let's all rejoice and buy it as Jobs, our Lord and Savior commandeth us to.

I'd expect it. After all Larry Ellison is a very good friend of Steve Jobs, and a former Apple board member.

Sun and Apple have had a very troubled relationship over the last 2 years or so. Jobs hates Java - and I really hope this time his irrational, lunatic behavior blows up in his face.

Well, as I said above the CPU decision is a result of Intel not allowing NVIDIA a license on the chipset. Others will give you an i3 with a crappy Intel gpu whereas here we get an older CPU with a proper gpu. In fact, this is exactly what I was waiting for, one of the reasons for my illogical plunge into buying one. And I will admit because for a ultra-portable I was looking for something that also had some aesthetic appeal. With the SSD it's not as overpriced as other Apple products.

I agree with you completely on Apple and it's restrictive policies and direction, which is why I personally loathe them. But when they offer me what I need in the hardware form factor after being sicking of waiting for what I wanted, I had to buy. I will install Linux and I will be happy, although embarrassed to own an Apple.

Re: New MacBook Air [Thread Split]

Has anyone actually got one yet? I only want one computer, so if I did buy the Air it wouldn't just be some portable thing to use as a backup to a more powerful laptop.

Is it good enough? I don't do anything heavy; just emails, web surfing, watching porn umm I mean downloading public domain video clips. I also need to VPN and "remote desktop" into other companies' Windows machines. I'd also need to connect it to a VGA computer monitor (I know there's an extra cost for the connector).

It will be fine for the lightweight tasks you describe. Most laptops are though, so make sure you are spending the extra cash for a reason. Those being design, weight, high res screen, and good value for an ssd. And take not that battery life is not superb. As you mention, for me it's a portable toy, and I have a supercomputer heating my apt.

Re: New MacBook Air [Thread Split]

My last/current laptop is an IBM Thinkpad X41 which was also expensive. I bought it for its solid build quality, excellent keyboard, and lack of weight (1.2Kg for a 4:3 12" screen).

The only competitor in my mind right now for theAir is the Toshiba R700 at half the price. As most (all?) laptops have now gone widescreen I need at least 13" to ensure I'm not ending up with less screen hight than I currently have. So that rules out the Lenovo X201(s). The T41s has bad battery life unfortunately, and is also very expensive.

Re: New MacBook Air [Thread Split]

Yes, the R700 was what I was considering before the Air was announced. As I said above, I am guilty of considering looks as one of the factors. It will look even better when I stick a penguin sticker over the apple.

Good news and amazing service - got an email today to confirm that the MacBook has been dispatched - that's a pretty amazing turnaround since I only ordered it on Thursday evening! Should arrive by 29th.

So it takes over a week from you ordering it to being delivered and that's amazing service? I don't know whether that's a comment on Switzerland or Apple ...

If you order a std product, with no extras or special features, you should receive it within 2 working days (or you can go to Bahnhofstrs and pick it up yourself ) otherwise will take around a week.

Re: New MacBook Air [Thread Split]

Remind me off when a friend took his iPhone back to the Apple store because the plastic was cracking. He came back raving that they swapped the phone out straight away and how great the service was.

The service would be really great if the phone didn't crack in the first place!
