It depends on your requirements doesn't it?

For those looking to write reports and presentations (i.e. needing a keyboard and full (e.g. Office) apps), the iPad won't do. I've heard many people asking for a slightly smaller Macbook Air.

Actually I was looking at my own three year old MacBook Pro and considering a new purchase. And then I thought . . . What do I actually do with my laptop? The Air would offer roughly the same capabilities . . . though a much better screen, flash memory HD, better form factor etc etc

I think it's all fine and well for someone that is well off to want a top quality Apple product and to pay the premium. But the macbook air is an expensive device.

But for other people (like me) who want a top spec laptop it doesn't really make a great deal of sense to get a macbook. I priced one out with the EPFL discount of about 18% and the dell was still about 400CHF cheaper and had a higher spec.

The macbook air has its place. For the person who needs a portable laptop and has an iMac at home for the heavy duty stuff.

They have reduced the price of the macbook air to what is a more afforable price in comparison to the rest of the macbook range, but not in comparison to other laptops.

Apple just said they wouldn't release something underpowered and ill-considered. They were never against the idea of a smaller laptop. The Core2Duo may not be top spec, but it's a darn sight better than an Atom.

Well, if you're in the market for a Dell, that's a different ball game.

Could you give some examples of 'heavy duty stuff'?

I wasn't in the market for a Dell. I was in the market for the best laptop my money could buy.

Installing an operating system from DVD Yeh you have that macbook super air drive for that but what's the point in having a super portable laptop and then having an external optical drive?

Editing in photoshop. I was doing this with 2GB of RAM and was told there wasn't enough memory. Not only the higher spec but the bigger screen is an advantage there. The faster processor would be an advantage too

Gaming for high demand games.

Downloading movies and torrents. 128GB really isn't very much for that. That is solved with an external HDD but then what's the point in buying an ultra portable laptop and using external this and external that?

You're living in the past. The Macbook Air is showing you the future.

If the OS is preinstalled and then updates are delivered over Software Update and apps are delivered via the expanded App Store, where's the need for a DVD drive?

I was trying to think of the number of times I've used the drive on my laptop. Last week I transferred some German audio lessons to my iPhone and used the laptop as an intermediary. A few months before that I created a CD for someone. For normal users use of a drive is so infrequent that it warrants moving it to a peripheral.

Yes. A faster processor would be an advantage, but Photoshop is still completely useable on an Air. As for memory, with the new Air this is expandable to 4gb.

As I said, I think the target market is those looking to do some work on the road.

You can get a 256gb drive if you really need lots of storage. Apple is betting that streaming replaces downloading though. 128gb is still enough to hold a lot of movies.

Re: New MacBook Air [Thread Split]

Despite my hatred for Apple and Jobs, I am going to be picking one up too. It's exactly what I needed. An i5 processor would have been more desirable, but I am also getting a supercomputer at home so I'll survive.

I really was holding out for a hybrid pad/latop like the now cancelled Lenovo U1 (using the pad for reading magazines/websites/physics articles on the train), but looks like that won't happen anytime soon, so this the Air it is for ultra-portable computing and reading.

I'd pick one up today, but I am annoyed at the CH pricing compared to US/Canada, so I will wait till xmas and save myself a few hundred bucks. Esp annoying since the CHF is stronger than the USD/CAD.

I am leaning towards a 13" with 2.16GHz/4GB/256GB.

Well Jobs just yesterday said netbooks. laptops, and even PCs are dead.

He's a prick cheating the masses into buying his shit. Did you see the dumbing down of OSX for Lion.

As I said previously, I would rather not contribute to his lifestyle, but the Air is exactly what I need so am going to buy. Put Linux on it and I am set.

Looks like it's good enough to play Call of Duty 4.

If you're really really into high performance gaming, some form of earth-bound workstation is always going to outperform a flighty laptop anyway.

That ipad app thread made me check out pricing in Hong Kong. Geez... less than Fr.1000 for the cheapest model (Fr.1199 in CH). Must plan my next trip to Asia carefully...

Re: New MacBook Air [Thread Split]

I'll be interested to see if they have solved the heat throttling issues. I've got the previous MBA and if I am streaming a movie over the wireless network at home there are times when I have to put it in standby so that it can cool down enough to actually play the movie without jerking. I'll also be reading the first reviews to see what real life battery life is like.

I've just about convinced myself that at 2k (with educational discount) for the 13 inch with 4gb ram 2.13ghz processor and 256gb is worth the upgrade. I think I paid 2249 in August 09 for the same processor but only 2gb ram and 128gb SSD. With all the other upgrades ie graphics, screen, battery, extra USB, sd slot I think they have priced it quite competitively. Just a shame that they didn't bump the processor too.

CH prices are frustrating, but still not as bad as the UK or Euro ones.

They claimed in the presentation last night that they've introduced a much more rigorous battery test . . . so the stats are based on constant wireless web-browsing.

You can thank VAT for that though. Just did some very quick calcs on the cheapest one and if you deduct tax and compare at current exchange rates the UK is CHF20 cheaper than CH which is CHF20 cheaper than Germany.

Re: New MacBook Air [Thread Split]

yeah, what is with the price difference - checked the UK, Australian and Swiss online stores and the new MBAs are priced about 250 US more than the US store? Also, the RAM and processor upgrades are 130 CHF vs 100 US (i.e. we pay 35 USD more to have extras fitted)
