My view is that if you can't tell a scam email from a real one, then you probably deserve to get scammed.

Re: Reporting Internet Crime

I just wanted to check this - the Swiss link up there at the top - can I use this link to report a scam email or is it not the right place? Seems more for reporting actual "internet crimes" that occurred (so, if I actually fell for a scam)?

I manage a website for a well known Basel parents group and recently several of our members who have ads on the buy & sell page got sent some scam emails.

It's one of these "I send you a registered cheque, you then take out the cost of your goods and forward the balance onto a third party, oh and by the way please tell me everything I need to know to steal your cash and identity."

So far nobody was taken in but a couple of people have entered into dialogue with this guy and almost believed him. Obviously we'll warn our members directly, but I'd like to report it somewhere - but where is the right place? It's a hotmail email address - is it something hotmail should then deal with or are the police interested in such things? In the UK I would contact consumer direct, is there a "consumers association" kind of thing here?

Thanks

I think you are right. Scam emails are so common that it is probably too much to expect them all to be investigated. If it was something particularly bad or unusual, I would report it though.

Here is a UK site that is a very useful source of advice. It has been put together by many of the large internet companies/users and UK Government. Get Safe Online
